Class Ten – Birthing Who You Really Are – Lesson 19

Text for class: A Course in Weight Loss by Marianne Williams

Email the class at healthyandwhole@upchurch.org

Guiding Scripture

Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NKJV)

Soul Work

Activity for Lesson 19 – birthing who you really are

·      In your journal, make a list of all the things that scare you about being thin.
·      Now write down a list of all the things you long for in the experience of being thin.
·      Next, write a letter to the new you. Tell her why you fear her, and what makes you nervous about letting her appear. But then tell her your deepest truth: that you do love her and hope that she comes.
·      Proactively celebrate the arrival of your reborn self. Prepare for her as you would the arrival of a new life, which indeed it is. Every day, take one thing that you know is an aspect of the self now passing-something that perhaps has nothing directly to do with food, yet involves living at a lower energy than that which you are now choosing-and let it go. Perhaps you will get rid of old clutter, or take care of business long overdue. Really, isn’t that what weight loss is?
·      In your journal pages, write down some of the thoughts, feelings, and activities of the new you. Write “The New Me” at the top of a page, and then start making a list. Ex. (I know what it feels like to be hungry.  I go to the gym in cute athletic gear.  I walk in the park.  I shop for clothes in any store I choose.)  Beneath each sentence, embellish further on what you embrace in your new life.

Guiding Scripture

Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NKJV)

Soul Work

Activity for Lesson 18 – honor the Process

The letter you now write is both a command and a goodbye. It is a leave-taking, a statement of independence from a master you will no longer allow to enslave you, and with whom you no longer agree to conspire. Remember that the letter, once written, belongs on your altar.

The letter has 3 parts:
Why I allowed you to live in me, and the ways that I said yes to you

Why I no longer need you, and what I have come to realize

What I say to you now, through the authority of Divine Mind

Activity for Lesson 17 – Forgive Others & yourself

1.    Your first task with this lesson is to identify those whom you have not forgiven. Know that even the slightest annoyance with someone is enough to throw your system out of Divine right order. For wherever you withhold your love, you deflect your miracle.
2.    Use your journal pages to list the names of all people whom, in your heart, you know you still judge. Explore your feelings as deeply as you can, and try not to rush through the process.  After you’ve explored your lack of forgiveness, write down these words: “I am willing to see this person differently.” Write that sentence three times, as it is very important.
3.    Write down the names of everyone you think you’ve wronged, every mistake you feel you’ve made, every regret you still carry. Apologize in your heart for any transgression toward others or toward yourself. Look at each name or event, then prayerfully release it into the hands of God. Say aloud, to yourself or to the memory of anyone to whom you owe an apology: “I sincerely apologize.”

Soul Work

Activity for Lesson 16 – discipline and discipleship

– Discipleship is a total commitment that leaves no room for anything else. Discipleship is much, much more than a sometimes thing; it’s an effort to totally immerse yourself in the light of love. And this will do more than just transform your eating. It will transform your entire life. Take anything that symbolizes the meditation path that calls to you-from the phone number of a meditation teacher you have heard about but not yet called, to the Workbook of A Course in Miracles, to a set of prayer beads–and place it on your altar for consecration to the Divine.

Soul Work

Activity for Lesson 15 – EXIT THE ALONE ZONE

– Make a list in your journal pages of various things you could do to increase your connection to other people.  Sometimes it’s an activity, while other times it’s simply a shift in attitude that lets others get closer to you.

– Daily, in your journal pages, note where you let others in that day and where you kept them out. Explore the places in your personality and in your lifestyle where you keep more space between yourself and others than you need to, where distance is not so much a healthy distance as an unhealthy one. Increased distance from others will lead to increased connection to food, as you run to the relationship that in a stressful moment feels like the one you can always count on.

Soul Work

Activity for Lesson 14 – Allow the Pain

·      Your task this lesson is to make space in your life, just as you make space in your heart, for any sadness you need to honor.  Perhaps take a long walk each evening, or a stroll on the beach each morning.  Allow yourself to grieve.  Your task is to inhabit the emptiness, breathe through it, learn its lessons, and hear the message it conveys.

·      Find three pieces of art (paintings, poems, films, novels, songs) that give meaning to deep sorrow.  Place them on your altar and commit yourself to reading or viewing them.  In honoring them, you honor your own tears in a way that releases rather than suppresses them.

Pray and meditate on the freedom you know have because of you surrendered the weight to God.

Activity for Lesson 13 – feel your feelings

 Purchase or repurpose a beautiful box that will be used as your God Box.

 On separate slips of paper, write the following statements and any additional inspirational scriptures or quotes; then place them into the box and put them on your altar.
o “Give Me your pain, and I will take it from you.” – God
o “Place all of this in My hands.” – God
o “Seek to forgive, and you will have peace.” – God
o “You are My perfect creation. Nothing you have ever done or thought, and nothing anyone else has done or thought changes that fact.” -God
o “Give Me your errors, and I will correct them for you. “ -God
o “You are deeply loved. Nothing you do can change My love for you.” -God

 Now work with the emotions that you wrote in your journal in lesson one (the wall of fear). Admit them. Feel them. Write them down. Give them to Divine Mind by affirming, “Dear God, I surrender this feeling to You.”

 For every emotion that you surrender, blindly chose one of the slips from your God Box and say it.

Pray and meditate on the freedom you know have because of you surrendered the weight to God.

Activity for Lesson 12 – Commit to yourself

If you don’t listen to yourself, you can’t honor yourself.  If you don’t listen to yourself, you can’t hear God’s voice within you.  If you don’t listen to yourself, you program your body to stop listening to itself.  And thus the hell that follows. (151/163)

This is a journaling exercise where you have a conversation with yourself.

You to self:  What are your thoughts?  Write in your thoughts in your journal in the morning, evening or both.  Allow yourself to see, review and bear witness to your thoughts, without judgment.

I forgive you for your mistakes.  Write any mistakes you feel you’ve made and surrender them.

I think your dreams are important.  If you don’t listen to yourself, then how will know what you think?  What are your true dreams?  What do you really long for?  What is your heart’s desire?

Activity for Lesson 11 – ritualize the change in you

  • “In returning to your spiritual center, you’re reclaiming your natural sense of intuitive knowing about everything. From who should be on your team, to what book might appear in your life to help you take a next step, to food that would be a gift to you rather than a source of suffering, the universe supports you in your path toward health and healing.” (red book, pg. 151-152)
  • Create a ceremony though which you pass from a formerly weakened to a newly strengthened you. This journey is a spiritual death and rebirth of sorts. It will mark the beginning of a new phase of your life. This initiation is not just a farewell to your compulsive self, but also a calling forth of the spirit of your true being. What follows below is a modification of the exercise as written in the text.
    • Identify an Inspirer – your Inspirer will be someone whose healthy weight invites you to move toward your own. Their presence demonstrates what’s possible.
    • Identify a Permitter – your Permitter will be someone who is also actively on the healing journey. Their purpose is to support you and hold the space spiritually for your triumph.
    • Choose music for your ceremony.
    • Draft a letter that you will read at your ceremony – this should include your stated intention and your personal statement of truth.
    • Draft a letter with what you want to hear from your Inspirer.
    • Draft a letter with what you want to hear from your Permitter.
    • Write a closing prayer for the ceremony.
    • This ceremony is something that you are creating on paper. Be creative. Make it your own. You can rename the roles, add participants, change the order. It is your ceremony. You may want to add a burning bowl experience, burning of sage, a walking meditation or a meal. Make it your own.

Soul Work

Activity for Lesson 10 – consecrate your body

Soul Work: Consecrate Your Body
Write down these categories (ideally one per page):
Waking up, breakfast and morning activities
Lunch and afternoon activities
Dinner and evening hours.

FRONT SIDE – PRESENT
On the front of the page, write what you typically do now at each of these times of day. Include:
What you eat
What you do with your life
How you feel about what you do
Your thoughts about other people, and so forth.

BACK SIDE – NEW EXPERIENCE
Write a description of the same day and consciously redesign it. Don’t just write about what you’re doing or how you feel about it, rather, describe your day from the perspective of your higher mind.
Write about the life you choose, rather than one lived powerlessly at the effect of habitual emotional and behavioral patterns.
Choose to be the real you as you write this: a conduit of God’s love, here to extend love and to do love’s work on Earth.
Allow love to dictate both your purposes and your plans for the day.
This is your intention, a manifesto of love for all the things you will do during your day and allow yourself to gently lean into it.

Read Lesson 8 – Surrender to the divine

Anoint yourself with oil

Clean up and beautify the area that you are going to anoint yourself.

Get some nice oil (olive oil will do). From the bottoms of your feet to the tips of your fingers, allow yourself to emotionally lean into your body, not recoil from it.

Rub the oil into your body with acceptance and with love. Take time over every inch of your body, praying to each limb, each curve, each scar, each joint. Do not rush. Accept, affirm, apologize and forgive.

The purpose is not to wish your body were different. Love your body as it is, knowing that in the space of that love it will automatically and miraculously rise to its highest expression.

Sit quietly and allow yourself to integrate the experience of reconnecting with your body.

Meditate, play music or do anything that brings you relaxation and peace.

Place the oil on your altar.

Ask & Act: How will I love myself today?

Pray and meditate daily for 15 minutes

Lesson 9 – Inhabit Your Body

soul work for lesson 9

Write your own personal story – where things went right and where things went wrong. Explore how you came to dissociate from fear, and perhaps even hate your body. And don’t expect all of this to come easy. Some of it might be funny, some of it might be horrifying, some of it might be ridiculous, and some of it might be extremely painful. What is important is that it be honest and true.
By writing down your history, you will come to understand it more fully. And by understanding it more fully, you will emerge from the darkness of your subconscious bondage to fears that were born in a distant past. These fears can be dissolved today, through grace and through love. In doing this lesson, you being the healing process.

Modification #1 of the activity – Do a decade-by-decade timeline and write what you remember from each decade. What was going on? How did I relate to my body? How did other people relate to my body? Did something happen that significantly change the way I defined myself? What happened that changed the way I perceived my body.

Modification #2 of the activity – Write a couple lines about what you thought about your body as the result of these experiences: how people commented on your appearance as a child (so pretty, too dark, thick, big-boned, fat), going through puberty, your first crush, your first heartbreak, your first true love, getting married ,becoming a mom, getting divorced, and/or going through menopause. What beliefs were generated from those experiences?

Modification #3 of the activity – Write your best memory related to your appearance and self-worth.  Write your worst memory related to your appearance and self-worth.  What beliefs were generated from those experiences?

Your Piece of Fruit

  1. Go to the store and buy one piece of fruit. For the purpose of the ritual, attempt to make this a store trip solely for this item.
  2. Wash your fruit.
  3. Look at it.
    • One of the reasons that wholesome food seems less than delicious is because you’re not seeing it.
    • There is perfection in nature, perfection in you, perfection in food as nature created it. Your own perfection is invoked by nature’s perfection in you. A walk through nature calms and restores you emotionally, and natural food calms and restores you physically.
  4. Take your piece of fruit, representing all healthy food with which you wish to build a new relationship, and place it upon your altar. Dedicate it in your heart to the Divine, which both created an sustains you. Give thanks for your creation and for your sustenance, and pray to be returned to your right relationship with food.
  5. Now eat it. Giving thanks with every bite.

Today’s lesson involves healing the relationship between the part of you that eats wisely (Thin You), and the part of you that eats dysfunctionally (Not-Thin You).  They are two aspects of one mind.  They cannot be separated by force, but only by love.  You will begin a new relationship with a part of yourself you’ve kept out of your heart.  For in keeping her out of your heart, you’ve kept her on your body.

Learning to love Not-Thin You, bringing her back into the circle of your compassion, you will gain dominion over your life.  Love will harmonize your internal kingdom.

Part 1 – Based in honesty and transparency, write a letter to Not-Thin You.  Keep it real.  This dialogue allows you to surrender thoughts that are already there, but that if unexplored remain as toxins in your system.

Part 2 – Write a response letter from Not-Thin You.

Do not underestimate the power of writing these letters.  Building this relationship between Thin You and Not-Thin You is the beginning of your reconciliation with a part of yourself that belongs inside, not outside your castle doors.
